Pepperbread Loaf

Like gingerbread, but with pepper instead…

Ingredients

2/3 cup flour
2 teaspoons black pepper
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons milk
7 tablespoons molasses
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/3 cup light brown sugar
5 tablespoons water
1 egg, beaten

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 325F and line a 9 by 5″ loaf pan.

Sift the flour and pepper into a large bowl. Mix the baking soda and milk together in a separate bowl and set aside.

Heat the molasses, butter, and sugar, and water together in a pot until dissolved. Let it cool a bit, and then add this mixture to the dry ingredients and mix into a smooth batter. Add the egg and mix well, then stir in the milk and baking soda mixture.

Put in loaf pan and bake for about 1 hour, or until a skewer come out clean.
